Macarthur FC players Ulises Davila, Kearyn Baccus, and Clayton Lewis have been charged in connection with a match-fixing scheme that rocked the A-League. The scandal resulted in hundreds of thousands of dollars being paid out in winnings overseas. According to an investigation by The Athletic, Davila was allegedly being instructed from abroad by a figure known as J Col to have players receive yellow cards in a clash between Macarthur and Sydney FC. Davila reached out to defender Matt Millar, who had previously mentioned to him that he was dealing with the 'astronomical' costs of planning a wedding. Davila allegedly told Millar, 'You know, this sort of thing happens all the time overseas in Europe and Spain. We're not actually affecting the outcome of the game. It's very... harmless.' Millar initially said no, but after being approached again in person by Davila agreed. Four yellow cards were achieved in that match thanks to one from a Sydney FC player, but Millar was not actually booked. The total payout was allegedly $226,941 — a profit of over $161,615. Soon, Millar was keen for payment to be made, with Davila doing so in a way that would hide any traces of the transactions. 'You can use my Visa card to make purchases for your wedding,' Davila said. 'Whatever you spend, I can give you the difference in transfer.' Millar responded, 'I think the suit was $1,800, so maybe just do the rest and it is sorted.' Meanwhile, Baccus reportedly received his funds from Davila, with the skipper pretending he was buying a VW Golf from the midfielder who was referred to in messages to J Col as 'The Butcher.' The other player implicated by the messages is former Macarthur winger Jed Drew, who has since completed a move to Austrian side TSV Hartberg. Just before Christmas the players held a party, where Drew learned of the scheme and reportedly said, 'Why didn't you include me? I would've done it. Do it for me next time.' Early in January, another fix was set for a clash between the Bulls and Adelaide United, with organisers keen to bet on eight corners in the match. Ultimately, it did not go ahead on this occasion, with Davila 'ruling himself out,' according to The Athletic. Things went quiet until April, when Macarthur were due to play Sydney again. J Col wanted five bookings between the teams. Davila, suspended for the match, allegedly reached out to Drew, offering the winger 'at least six, six, seven K.' 'Does it have to be five yellow cards in the whole game?' asked Drew, via text message. 'Can it be two from Sydney FC as well?' Davila allegedly responded angrily, 'Don't just call names man, don't call shit idiot.' Drew pulled out and the plan did not go ahead. 'You let go like 30k hahahahah,' Davila said to Drew the next day via text message. 'You could pay Disneyland holidays.' 'Don't put that shit. Just delete it bro,' Davila wrote. 'You never know, maybe one day we'll drag us... something.'
